Edward Rud

1677-1727

Edward Rud[d] was born at Stockton [or Stogdon], Co. Durham, the son of Thomas Rud of Long Newton.  He attended St Paul's School, London, before being admitted as sizar to Trinity in 1695.  He had previously matriculated at Brasenose College, Oxford, in 1694.

He won a scholarship in 1697, graduated BA in 1698-9, and became a Fellow in 1701.  He took his MA in 1702, his BD in 1709, and his DD in 1717.  He was ordained deacon at Lincoln in 1701, and priested the following year.  He was incorporated at Oxford in 1704.  From 1715 to 1718 he was Perpetual Curate of St Michael's, Cambridge, and then he served as Rector of North Runcton in Norfolk from 1709 until his death in 1727.  North Runcton was a College living, but the advowson was exchanged for that of Reepham cum Kerdiston in 1840.  Rud married the widow of Griffith Williams, his predecessor in the living.

He left a valuable collect of books to the Library of Trinity College, including his diary (of 1709-1727), which was published by H.R. Luard. This is primarily of interest for the light it sheds on the Bentley affair; in spite of being a supporter of the Master, Rud cannot fail to present an unpleasant picture of his character.
