Handel Messiah
Handel's masterpiece is performed by a tiny baroque band and just eight fabulous singers.
Uniting musicians trained at Cambridge, the Britten-Pears Young Artist Programme, William Christie's Jardin des Voix and the European Baroque Academy, Solomon's Knot is dedicated to "blowing layers of respectful dust off their Baroque repertoire" [Musical Opinion, 2010] and entertaining audiences with carefully-constructed programmes. Their 'Chamber' Messiah project was a hit at St John's Smith Square last year, prompting a distinguished Handel scholar to say: "To produce a wholly new version of Messiah is remarkable in itself but to infuse it with such engagement, commitment, imagination, thoughtfulness, understanding, sensitivity, tension, energy, contrast and taste - deserved the ovation you got and more."
£25, unwaged £20, students £12, available from www.CambridgeEarlyMusic.org or from Selene Webb, Old Post Room, Whewell's Court (330870 / sjw32@cam.ac.uk)
Please note starting time.
At 6.00pm in Trinity College Chapel, before this concert, Solomon's Knot co-founders Jonny Sells and Julian Forbes will engage in a discussion with renowned Handel expert Dr Ruth Smith about the origin and raison d'être of the 'chamber Messiah', with reference to the performance history of both Messiah and Solomon's Knot. This will be chaired by the Associate Artist Director of Solomon's Knot, James Halliday.

A rare opportunity to see this work, widely recognised as the first ever opera, performed in full. This production was first performed on September 2011 in Santa Maria dei Miracoli, Venice, and has been newly adapted for Trinity College Chapel.
The piece tells the story of the struggle of Anima and Corpo (Soul and Body) to resist earthly temptations and dedicate themselves to a holy life. They encounter a succession of corrupting influences, intent on derailing their resolve: The World, his companion Worldly Life, Pleasure and her acolytes. Under the fearsome supervision of their Guardian Angel, Anima and Corpo are given a glimpse of the eternity that could await them… in heaven or in hell.
Philip Thorby, one of the world’s most distinguished exponents of Renaissance and Baroque music, professor at Trinity Laban and responsible for the modern edition of the Rappresentatione, conducts. Lewis Reynolds, who has directed at the Arcola Theatre, The Kings Head Theatre and now as an assistant director at the Royal Opera House, returns as director.
The cast will be led by soprano Ruth Fraser, recent graduate of Trinity Laban, and baritone Guy Hayward, an ex-choral scholar of Trinity College, Cambridge. Cavalieri's miraculous, pioneering music will be brought to life by distinguished instrumentalists, including Jennifer Bennett, violin, and David Hatcher, bass viol, improvising obbligato parts around the voices in a way described in contemporary sources but rarely heard today, and Cambridge University choral scholars will sing the roles and chorus.
This production is at the invitation of Prof. Béla Bollobás.
Cost: £10 full price, £5 student/concessions
