The remarkable Hapsburg dynasty, which at its peak ruled much of Europe and established the first truly global empire, is the inspiration for a fascinating and sumptuous journey through two centuries of Continental repertoire.
Stile Antico performs music closely associated with the Hapsburg monarchs, focusing first on the Empereror Maximilian, and then on the great Spanish rulers Charles V and Philip II, who gathered around them the finest Spanish and Flemish composers of their day. We encourter coronations, celebrations and funerals, and meet the Hapsburgs at play and at prayer, telling their story through repertoire ranging from Gombert's luxuriant mass to Lobo's exquisite expression of grief, and from the intricacies of Isaac to the exuberance of Morales.

Music by the great polyglot of renaissance music, Orlandus Lassus
Supple French chansons, passionate Italian madrigali and villanelle, earthy German Lieder, and the haunting Latin Sibylline Prophecies, not to mention music with no words at all – all by Lassus and the composers whom he championed. From examples of his Musica Reservata (a style reserved for the most educated patrons) to the anarchic comic world of the commedia dell’arte, Lassus revelled in combining music and text – whatever the language!

After a sell-out performance last year, he is welcomed back to Cambridge Summer Music Festival’s Spring Concert series with great acclaim.

The Circle of Life: Disney at Trinity
Trinity College Music Society
Simon Nathan conductor
Simon Nathan has put on a number of extremely successful themed concerts around Cambridge in the last few years, including the Harry Potter themed concert at West Road in Michaelmas term this year. It is an absolute pleasure for TCMS to be hosting this Disney concert, played and sung by many of the best musicians in Cambridge. Simon has got together a team of nearly 100 players and singers to take us on a Disney-themed trip around the circle of life.
From the past (Tale as Old as Time) to the future (A Whole New World), visiting the weak (Poor Unfortunate Souls) and the strong (Go the Distance), tasting Heaven's Light and experiencing the depths of Hellfire, prepare for your childhood nostalgia strings to be tugged like they've never been tugged before.
£5 / £3 / TCMS members free
ADC website http://www.adcticketing.com/whats-on/concert/the-circle-of-life-disney-at-trinity.aspx
Advance tickets are sold out, but 50 extra tickets will be released on the door before the concert. TCMS members will be given priority for these tickets until 3.50pm so there will be a chance for you to come to the concert if you still wish to attend. Please remember to bring your TCMS membership card to make it quicker for us!

Bach Requests by Anne Page
Cambridge Summer Music
Anne Page organ
Cambridge-based organist Anne Page recently completed a marathon that took her a year to complete. Different from the sporting news that we have had for much of 2012, this was, instead, a musical marathon in which she played the entire organ works of J.S. Bach. This was no mean feat - 23 concerts in 14 different venues, with a total audience of around 8000, and requiring hundreds of hours of rehearsals. The result was some wonderful playing, and audiences were so taken with this enterprise that many came to several of the concerts (and some to all of them!)
Now, as a final farewell to this project, Anne is presenting a special concert which gives a chance for you to request your favourite Bach pieces. She will play this special request programme on one of her favourite organs, the Metzler in Trinity College Chapel. It will be in aid of the Cambridge Summer Music Festival's Sustainability Appeal, to raise money for the charity.
Your choice! If you would like to suggest a work, please send your request to contact@cambridgesummermusic.com. If your work is chosen, you will receive a free ticket!
