Another programme with a broad sweep of composers: Adrian Willaert, Dominique Phinot, Jacobus Gallus, Jean de Latre and Jean Richafort are complemented by two more recent German composers, Wolfgang Rihm and Hans Schanderl. Featured composer Ivan Moody receives a performance of his Canticum Canticorum II. As always at the Festival of the Voice, a mixture of composers known and unknown, but presented in a compelling and inspired fashion by Singer Pur.
‘What seizes the ear are the thick weaves of counterpoint, and the dense and dissonant harmonies. To make this music speak the singers need a razor sharp sense of pitch and a focused, pure tone, which the young German vocal sextet, Singer Pur, certainly have.’ BBC Music Magazine

The final concert in the Festival of the Voice epitomises the 40 years of The Hilliard Ensemble’s outstanding achievement. We bring together three generations of vocal ensembles, in a programme which crosses the ages and geographical borders. The dynamic new ensemble Eo Nomine sings Wilbye, Tomkins, Monteverdi, Gesualdo and Schütz. Singer Pur offer a Festival first with music by Brahms, Sting, and Cole Porter. amarcord sing Jean Cras and join The Hilliard Ensemble in a work by Roger Marsh; and we hear Japanese folksongs by Toshio Hosokawa. The climax of the Festival comes when conductor Sarah Tenant-Flowers directs a performance of Orlando Gough’s Hand over Hand, given by all four vocal ensembles.

To launch the festival, The Hilliard Ensemble has created a very special programme – testament, if any were needed, to their pre-eminence in the vocal world. 13th century French music, Pérotin, Sheryngham and Cornysh sit alongside traditional Armenian music, Arvo Pärt and Vache Sharafyan. The Ensemble is joined by Singer Pur for featured festival composer Ivan Moody’s Anástasis.
‘The Hilliards evoke such gorgeous sonic landscapes, there is such delicate complexity in their tones, that this really is beauty of a rarefied quality.’ Gramophone

Founded in 1992 by erstwhile members of the world-famous St. Thomas Boys Choir in Leipzig, five part ensemble amarcord present a programme of music from ‘the libraries of St. Thomas and amarcord’. Mixing the old and the new, they contrast 16th and 17th century works by Pandolfo Zallamella, Giovanni Battista Stefanini, Johann Walter (and Orlando di Lasso), with contemporary works by Krystof Penderecki, Ivan Moody, Marcus Ludwig and with UK premieres of works by Bernd Franke and Sidney Marquez Boquiren.
‘They were flawless in their shaping and consistency of colour of musical line, both in the meandering unison of plainsong and in the intertwining voices of Renaissance polyphony. They were also impeccable in balance and blend, the five voices like a five-stringed instrument, identical in all but range.’ The Irish Times

An evening of lieder and opera by three extraordinary Austro-German Jewish composers, consigned to oblivion under the Nazis - Alexander Zemlinsky, Franz Schreker and Viktor Ullmann.
This is an attempt at cultural rehabilitation, but - more than that - it is an opportunity to reassess phenomenally beautiful music. In the mid-1920s, Franz Schreker was as popular with audiences as Richard Strauss, and had been acclaimed as Wagner's successor by the critic Paul Bekker; Alexander Zemlinsky was regarded as a great composer by Schoenberg, Berg and Webern; and Viktor Ullmann, one of his most promising students, had the prospect of a bright compositional future - a prospect which would end abruptly in Auschwitz in 1944. Can these figures have been relegated to the footnotes of musical history merely because of historical injustices? From the impressionistic delicacy of Zemlinsky's songs, to Schreker’s unhinged sensuality, to Ullmann's romantically tinged austerity - Footnotes offers a rare opportunity to hear them and make up your own mind.
The evening concludes with the UK premiere of Act II of Schreker's Die Gezeichneten (with piano accompaniment) a phantasmagorical look at the function of art in the midst of cultural and moral crisis, set in 16th century Italy. Alviano Salvago, the local crippled billionaire, plans to donate his paradise island to the city of Genoa, and dissociate himself from his violently libidinous friends. When he meets an alluring young artist, Carlotta, he is bewildered to discover new, romantic impulses. Indifferent to his physical disfigurement, she even offers to paint his soul. But he is not the only one vying for her attention...
